Energy Efficiency Grading Standard (U3)
Just a reminder — the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) will implement a new energy efficiency grading standard (U3) for storage electric water heaters starting September 30, 2025!
The design of the new energy label remains unchanged from the current version. However, under the new grading system, the reference number on the label will be prefixed with [U3-] for easy identification.
At the same time, water heaters that receive a Grade 1 energy label under the new standard will be approximately 27% more energy-efficient compared to the current grading system*. As a result, some existing Grade 1 models may be downgraded to Grade 2 or Grade 3 under the new criteria.
